SCIENCE

  • Launch of the Hellenic Aquaculture Technology & Innovation Platform (HATiP).  FGM organised  an initial  preparatory meeting on the 20th of January 2011 (REPORT in GREEK) and the official launch of the new technology and innovation platform will be organised on the 15th of March 2011 following the work of EATiP with main focus on the main priorities of the Greek and Mediterranean mariculture.   • Marine Aquaculture Could Feed Growing World Population - ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2009) Marine aquaculture could play a large role in feeding humanity in the coming decades, although substantial changes will be needed to reduce its  reliance on terrestrial agriculture and other external feed subsidies. Fotis (Veterinary Medicine school–Aristotelian University of  Thessaloniki): advises: ‘Prefer aquaculture fish’       (in GREEK) 31.1.2011 -  SOURCE: health.in.gr   Thessaloniki:  Aristotelian University Professor George Fotis  advises that ‘Aquaculture fish are safer for the consumer due to  thorough monitoring’ and gives consumer advice on tips to estimate fressness of fisheries products.

  • EFSA gave a positive scientific opinion on the health claim submitted by FGM. This is seen as the first important step to the official approval of the health claim of cultured sea bass and sea bream expected by the EC by the end of 2011.Find more details in the news section

CONSUMER

  • Healthy Heart with omega 3 fatty acids (14/5/2010 – VASILIS IGNATIADIS www.ethnos.gr) One gram omega 3 fatty acids per day could prevent heart disease and reduce significantly mortality in heart attack patients or heart failure patients. These international broad scientific research findings were presented in the 9th North Greece Cardiology Conference in Thessaloniki. (Article in GREEK)

ENVIRONMENT

  • Interactions between Aquaculture and the Environment’ Aquaculture and the Environment’ is the first in a collection of guides of IUCN, FEAP and the General Secretariat for Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain (MAPA) that together will make up the guidelines for the development of sustainable aquaculture, and is devoted to the interaction between aquaculture practices and the environment. This guide does not address the interaction with other human activities taking place in the same environment. It addresses finfish and shellfish culture, but mainly focuses on finfish aquaculture, and specifically cage culture. GUIDE
